Continental Tire - Sumter Plant Announces Expansion

September 08, 2015

Continental Tire - Sumter Plant announces $275 million expansion and increases jobs commitment by 100. This will bring total CapEx to $675 million when phases I and II are completed. Original investment announced in March 2012 in FILOT agreement with Sumter County was $400 million and 1174 jobs.

"We partnered with the company in 2011 and said we would be in lock step with them throughout this journey as a team. We have never wavered on that commitment," said Greg A. Thompson, chairman of Sumter Economic Development. "We are excited beyond words that they believe in this community as much as we do".

“We congratulate Continental Tire, The Americas - Sumter Plant on this expansion," added County Council Chair Naomi Sanders.  "I thank my colleagues on County Council for working diligently with the Economic Development team and Administration to prepare a package that is a win-win for the County and the company. We are partners and this expansion will create additional tax base and new jobs for our citizens and that is why economic development is a priority for this Council.”

"On October 6, 2011 we announced the largest single private sector investment in Sumter’s storied past, and this is again a momentous day," said Sumter Mayer Joe McElveen.  "$275 million more means more jobs, more business and more tires. It means Sumter is again making sure that we take care of our existing industry and our people by fostering economic development that creates good jobs and grows the wealth of all our citizens. We appreciate the continued confidence this company has in our community and it is a testament to the resiliency of this community that continues to improve and become a Great place to live work and conduct business."

Congrats South Carolina Department of Commerce, Sumter City and County and Sumter Economic Development and SSGI as well as TheLinkSC regional Alliance. Another huge investment!
